Book Synopsis and Review

On picture day, Faizah eagerly dresses up in her special red dress and matching hair ribbons that were passed down from her mother and sister. Her teacher encourages the students to imagine a better world, which motivates Faizah and her friends to spend the day helping each other. However, during the sibling pictures, Faizah realizes that she and her older sister Asiya don’t match like the other students and their siblings. With the help of her classmates, who are inspired by Asiya’s hijab, Faizah discovers the power of kindness and how it can come back to you unexpectedly.

This book is brimming with diverse representation, and is a great read to model passing kindness to others. There are many examples of how even simple actions such as playing a game with a friend, or even just asking, “How can I help you?,” are acts of kindness that can bring joy and make a big positive difference in someone else’s day.

Themes/Main Idea

  • Passing acts of kindness spreads joy and love throughout the community. Even them smallest kind actions make a difference.
  • Friends help each other find solutions to their problems, and take care to share kindness with each other.

*The World I Want to Live In* Craft

*What kind of world do you want to live in?* This book serves as a great prompt to encourage kids to contemplate and share what kind of world they want to live in~ and then to take action to help create this world they are dreaming of. Ask a little child this question, and you may get some fantastical answers like the ones listed in the book: Unicorn world, ice cream world, superhero world, etc. Encourage littles to expand on these ideas, and share how having such a world could benefit and help others. Perhaps ice cream world would be where everyone got ice cream for free, and ice cream makes people happy! Or unicorn world could be a world where unicorns help people when they are feeling sad and share magic and happiness. Whatever their answers and ideas: have fun exploring and sharing how you can change the world for better!
