How to Combat the Summer Reading Slide

Looking for a fun way to engage your little learners this summer?

Summer vacation is time for fun in the sun and a break from a more rigid school time routine. But it’s still important to engage your little learners in reading adventures! Research shows that students lose on average about 20% of school year gains in reading over summer break, which can compound with subsequent loss of reading skills each year.

Younger children, particularly children in kindergarten, first, and second grade, are most at risk of learning loss due to an accelerated learning learning curve in early childhood development. Children in low-income households are also disproportionately affected summer slide, which can have lasting impacts on their overall educational career.

I know little learners can be reluctant to read over summer, so I’m always looking for new and engaging ways to motivate them. One way to boost reading over summer, *without even cracking open a book,* is through the interactive reading program Dreamscape.

Dreamscape is the first ever FREE video game that allows players to adventure, strategize, build, and imagine their way to enhanced literacy skills. Designed for grades 2-8, players create an account and are dropped into the realm of dreams where they will be tasked with defending their dwell from invading dream creatures!

So where does the reading come in? Players must read passages and answer comprehension questions to collect resources, build structures, and win battle in order to defend their dwell!! Plus, this summer, Dreamscape is having a summer giveaway where students can receive a *free in-game reward* every week if they answer at least 5 comprehension questions ~ and littles love earning rewards! While the game is free, there are membership features that allow enthusiastic players to earn even more features and rewards.

But not only is this interactive reading program enticing for kids, it’s an excellent tool for teachers and parents too! All of the reading curriculum on Dreamscape is aligned to state standards making this an excellent program to help prepare students for State Testing as well. Additionally, the dynamic dashboard feature easily allow teachers, parents, and administrators to view performance reports and assign individualized reading skills for players to work on. Their newest feature includes a placement test so adults can get an overview of the player’s reading level before beginning gameplay.

So, where can you access Dreamscape? Dreamscape is available for play in-app and online, making it a great tool to be used both at home and in school . To learn more, check out the following links:
