Model Social Skills through Stories: A guide to picture books to support social learning

My toddler just started half-day preschool a few weeks ago, and it’s been his first big experience socializing with peers his own age. Trips to the park or pool are one thing, but being in a classroom surrounded by children at the same developmental stage is a whole new world. So far, the transition has gone smoothly and he tends to be more interested in doing his own thing than jumping into group play, but preschool naturally brings more opportunities to practice important social skills like sharing, turn-taking, and compromising. At home, his baby sister happily goes along with whatever he wants, so this is new territory! To help support him as these situations arise, we’ve been turning to picture books as a gentle way to model and talk about different social scenarios.

In this guide below, you’ll find a carefully curated list of the picture books I’ve been using to help support social learning. These stories don’t just teach lessons; they spark conversations, invite reflection, and give kids the language they need to understand their own experiences. Whether you’re a teacher planning social skills lessons in the classroom or a parent supporting your child at home, these books provide meaningful entry points to help children grow into compassionate, confident, and connected people.
