Book Synopsis/ Review

Milo’s best friend is Jay. But when Jay start to hang out with their new neighbor, Suzi, Milo can’t help but to feel jealous. Suddenly, a green-eyed monster appears, whispering jealous thoughts into Milo’s ears so that Milo doesn’t want to play with Jay or Suzi anymore, thus making Milo feel sad and lonely. Can Milo find a way to get rid of the monster, repair his friendship, and perhaps make a new friend in the process?

The Big Bright Feelings series always has the best Social Emotional Lessons for littles, and *Milo’s Monster* is perfect for helping kids cope with feelings of jealousy. The story is relatable for many littles who have ever struggled with sharing friends. I appreciate the overall message that when we open our hearts to new people, we open our lives to new friendships.

Directions

COVER TEMPLATE

  • Choose a Monster Cover template. There are 4 different versions available in both color and black-and-white.
  • Version 1 is Plain with no text
  • Version 2: “When I Feel Jealous, I Can…”
  • Version 3: How to get rid of Jealousy
  • Version 4: Personalized Template – How ______ gets rid of jealousy (Write your name in the blank: How __Maya__ gets rid of jealousy).
  • Cut the Monster Cover in half on the dotted line so that you have two pieces. The “Response” Template will go in between the two pieces and attach them together.
  • Color in the Monster if you chose black-and-white.

BODY RESPONSE TEMPLATE

  • Next, choose a Response Template. There are 6 differentiated versions.
  • Versions 1-3 include prompts to cope with feelings of jealousy. There includes a version for picture responses, picture & writing, and mostly writing.
  • Versions 4-6 are for your own written/drawing responses and prompts
  • Cut out the response template. **Keep the top and bottom tabs on! Do not cut them off*

TO CONNECT:

  • To connect the Response Template and Monster Cover, fold back the two tabs. Tape or glue the front side of the bottom tab to the top-back of the bottom half of the Monster cover. Then, tape/glue the front side of the top tab to the bottom-back of the top half of the Monster cover.
  • Next, fold the top half of the Monster Cover half way down, folding the response behind. Fold the bottom half of the Monster Cover up to meet the top half in the middle, folding the rest of the response template behind.
  • The response template should fold in on itself as you close the Monster cover halves to make it a whole Monster, and then when you stretch open the Monster Cover, your responses will be revealed!
