Readers will learn vocabulary for all the different ways to voice their *dissent* with injustice: I do not Concur! I Disapprove! I Resist! This is an excellent read to spark conversations about standing up for yourself, for others, and for what you believe in, even when the majority is against you. After all~ all it takes is one courageous soul to ignite a generation of trailblazers.

*I Dissent/ I Concur* Opinion Gavels Craft

Ruth Bader Ginsburg overcame prejudice and sexism to make her mark on the world as a Supreme Court Judge, fighting against injustice, expressing her dissent, and working to guarantee women’s rights and equality. She used her voice to stand up for what she believed in and to stand up for others~ and after reading her stories, little learners are bound to be fired up to express their own dissent with injustices they’ve encountered in their own lives. Learners are never too young to express their opinions and use their voice to stand up for what they believe in. Encourage them to share their disagreements, or support, for issues that effect them or those around them. One way to encourage this conversation is with this bookish craft inspired by the story: *I Dissent/ I Concur* Opinion Gavels. Use these gavels toe encourage little learners to share their dissent and share what they concur with. *You are never too young to be heard and make a difference.*

Materials

Directions

  • Choose a “Dissent” and “Concur” Gavel Head Cover. There are colored and black and white versions with 2 different heading styles for both dissent and concur: “I Dissent” or “_____ Dissents” // “I concur” or “_____ concurs”
  • If you chose the one with the blank, write your name on the blank line. Ex: “__Maya__ Consents”-If you chose the black and white version, color it in.
  • Cut out the gavel head.
  • Next, choose a “Gavel Body Writing Template”. There are color or black and white versions with different writing template options: Blank, writing prompts with statement and opinion prompts, writing prompt with just a statement prompt,  writing prompt with picture space, writing prompt with lines and picture space. 
  • Color if you chose black and white.
  • Then, fill in the template prompts, drawing a picture or writing what you dissent or you concur with, and stating your opinion if prompted to do so. 
  • Cut out the gavel body writing template. 
  • To connect the Gavel body template and the head, put glue on the Body Template where it says glue on the left-top side. 
  • Then, line up the gavel head to align with the “gavel body template head” underneath it and glue it on.
  • The Top Gavel head cover should flap open to reveal the I Dissent or I Concur statements underneath.

  • Share your I Dissent / I Concur Gavels with family and friends to share your opinions on topics
  • Use your gavels to share your opinion about what you think is just and unjust in your community/ in society / in the world
  • Teacher can share different controversial topics, and students can use their gavels to share their opinions
  • Use your gavels to remind you to stand up for what is right and to speak up for what you believe in, just like RBG did
