*My Magical Yet* Craftivity
As a teacher, one of mai goals is to help mai little learners embrace all parts of the learning process, failures included, and to develop a growth mindset. Too often I see my students become embarrassed if they get something wrong. This fear of mistakes makes them hesitant to try new things, to take a chance, or to put their full effort into their work. It’s important for students to understand the value of using failure to grow. Growth mindsets help them believe in themselves and pursue their goals and dreams despite challenges they may face. Reading books featuring characters who use a growth mindset helps model for students how to never give up and how to keep trying. The character’s initial feelings of discouragement often mirror their own, and the students can use that connection to also learn from the character the value in pursuing their goals regardless of any setbacks. After reading, make sure to have a discussion with your little learners, and have them reflect and share how they can use growth mindset in their own lives to face their own challenges. “The Magical Yet” is an excellent example of a book sharing growth mindset, and the craft inspired by the story will help little’s practice having a growth mindset, and will give them actionable tips to try if they ever feel like giving up. Materials
- *My Magical Yet* Craftivity Downloadable Template
- Scissors
- Colors: Pencils, markers, crayons
- Glue/ Tape
Directions
- Choose a ”Magical Yet” template. There are colored and black and white versions.
- There is a version that focuses on growth mindset positive affirmations you can tell yourself if you can’t do something yet, or a version that focuses on growth mindset actions you can take if you can’t do something yet. There are also versions that work with either affirmations or actions.
- If you chose the black and white version, color it in and don’t forget to put your name if you chose “_______’s Magical Yet”
- Cut the Magical YET in half on the dotted line so that you have two pieces. The “Inside Template” will go in between the two pieces and attach them together.
- Next, choose an “Inside Template”. There are magenta-colored versions, or black and white versions. One version you can write in your own positive affirmations, or growth mindset actions in the blank spaces, and the other version is blank and you can cut and paste the affirmations or activity examples included in the resource onto the “Inside Template” blank space.
- If you choose to use the resource examples, cut out the different affirmations or activities that connect with you, and glue them onto the inside template blank space.
- Cut out the Inside Template**Keep the top and bottom tabs on! Do not cut them off*
- To connect the YET and Inside template, fold back the two tabs. Tape or glue the front side of the bottom tab to the top-back of the bottom half of the YET. Then, tape/glue the front side of the top tab to the bottom-back of the top half of the YET.
- Next, fold the Inside Template in on itself so that when it is folded, the top and bottom half of the YET line up.
- The Inside Template should fold in on itself as you close the YET to make it whole, and then when you open the YET, your affirmations or growth mindset activities will be revealed! Surprise!
