MaiStoryBook Library: Jabari Jumps + *Glamour Goggles* Craft

Introducing a story to officially welcome the summer months~ featured in MaiStoryBook Library Collection:

“Jabari Jumps” by Gaia Cornwall

Book Synopsis and Review

Ready for summer?! In this story, our friend Jabari has been preparing~ he’s completed his swimming lessons and passed his swimming test~ to jump off the diving board at the local pool this summer. He is definitely ready to jump off this super high… way up there above the water… diving board. But maybeee he might just need to do some stretching first…Even though Jabari says he’s ready to jump, what he’s saying doesn’t always seem to match what he’s *feeling* inside. Jabari’s dad notices his conflicting feelings and offers some sage advice that gives Jabari the confidence he needs to take a chance. This is a story about love, support, and finding the courage to believe in yourself and take the leap.

It is officaly the summer months, so what better way to kick off the season than a summer themed read aloud down the pool! This book will have you packing up your sun screen and swim suits, and heading to the pool, or beach, for your own *Splash* in the water! Also, it’s a great story for encouraging children to face their fears. Being a little scared of something new and challenging is natural. But~ if you believe in yourself~ and believe that *you are ready*~ taking a leap might just grant you a most thrilling *Surprise!*

*Glamour Goggles* Craft

My favorite part of summer is swimming, and since I live super close to the beach, diving into the waves is the best summer activity. Any summer vacation plans must include either the ocean or a swimming pool~ the water is a summer-must-have! As I mentioned earlier this week on Instagram, if I were to be an animal, I would be a *sea-otter*~ so that I could frolic in the water, have fun in the sun, eat delicious shellfish, and cuddle with my sea-otter buddies. For now, I can appease my sea-otter spirit by spending my days poolside or on the shore, dipping in and out of the water and floating around to my heart’s content. However, if I’m going to spend all that time in the sea~ if only I could see *underwater* with my *human eyes…* Lucky for me, there’s a way! *Goggles*  are my window into the underwater world! Slip on a pair of goggles, and my underwater surroundings illuminate witha burst of clear bright blue. Now~ I can swim and spin and swirl under the water, my eyes wide open and soaking in the sights around me. For this week’s craft inspired by our story, get ready to design your own *Glamour Goggles.* Prepare for an afternoon of summer-swimming-poolside fun!

Materials

  • 2 pipe cleaners (choose your goggle strap color- Jabari has yellow)
  • 1 piece of construction paper (choose your goggle color- Jabari has blue)
  • Scissors
  • Markers/ Crayons
  • Glitter Glue/ Puffy Paint

Directions

  • Place the paper in front of the child’s face and mark where the child’s eyes are so you know how far to space the eye holes and where to cut them.
  • Trace eye holes around where you marked the eyes. Then draw the goggle frame around the eye holes. See the photo example. Make the frames thick enough so that you can decorate. Especially make the two side-edges thicker because that is where you will attach the strap.
  • Cut out the goggle frame and cut out the eye holes.

  • Carefully use the scissors or a pencil to poke a hole on each of the two side-edges next to the eye frames.
  • Take a pipe cleaner and poke it through the hole. Twist the very end of it to attach it to the goggles. Do the same for the other side with the other pipe cleaner.

  • Pick up the goggles and wrap them around your child’s head to see where to twist the pipe cleaner strap so that if fits around his/her head. Twist the two pipe cleaners together to  secure the size of the goggles and strap.

  • Slide them off. Time to decorate!
  • Use the markers/crayons and glitter glue/ puffy paint to decorate the frames. Make them *glamourous!*
  • If you used glue or paint, let them dry before putting them on!

Enjoy Your *Glamorous Goggles*

  • Wear your goggles as you re-read the story and put them on as Jabari is about to dive into the pool!
  • Use your goggles to act out the story. Pretend to be Jabari stretching, climbing the ladder, springing up and down, bending your knees, and diving with a big splash!
  • Share your glamour goggles with family and friends to help retell the story, or share your own pool-time adventures.
  • Wear your goggles to prepare you for summer fun~ or to build excitement as you plan and pack for the pool or a day at the beach!
